One of the nicest things about handyman businesses is that they really do not require a lot of marketing. Your best channel for finding new customers is your existing customers. However, if you are starting out, or even if your handyman service is established, one marketing tool you do need: Business cards.
Without a business card you will look less professional, and you also will have no quick and easy way to give your number to people, or for your existing customers to pass along your contact information to their friends.
While you can get business cards printed at a local printer, now the easiest way is to get them done online. For those of you who are still resistant to using computers, and even more resistant to giving your credit card information to any business online, there are some excellent reasons to overcome your concerns. Your business cards will be much cheaper if you order them online, and you'll get them in the same or less time. If you get your cards online you'll also be able to fiddle around with what you want to put on the card for as long as you want (and save your design and come back later), plus you can see what your changes will look like live, if you want to fiddle with type sizes and type faces and whatnot. So getting your cards done online has really surpassed getting them done at a local printer.
I researched some of the large online printing companies that offer business cards recently and was pleasantly surprised to find how many of them have pre-designed business cards with handyman or home repair and construction themes. These pre-designed cards save you all the worries of having to have a business card and a logo designed, a process which could easily run you $500 all in. Instead, you pick from one of dozens of different pre-designed cards, add your personal contact information, and pay less than $30 for 500 to a 1000 cards. It is a very good deal.
Vistaprint is the largest business card printer, and they spend enough advertising that they are probably the first printer you'll come across if you do a search. I have ordered business cards from Vistaprint, and the quality is good, but frankly the shipping is a little slow. I ordered similar cards from MagicPrints.com and paid about the same price but got those cards about a week faster. The quality from MagicPrints was the same, and they actually had some pre-designed cards that were a little nicer than Vistaprint's, though if you just compare design options the two places are a draw.
What does put Vistaprint ahead (and this is an important point) is that they can also print all sorts of other business materials for you, from coffee cups to address stamps, car magnets (for the side of your car... an excellent marketing buy) to even setting you up with a website.
Other good online printers that I've worked with include Printing for Less, which has nice business cards and many other promotional products. I got 500 business cards plus 500 door hangers for a small home services client a few years ago, and the price and quality were extremely good. The two items set them up nicely for marketing materials for less than $100 all in.
